Can I use Bathroom & Shower Cleaner outside the bathroom?Updated a day ago

TL;DR: Bathroom & Shower Cleaner is built for bathrooms, and it carries over to any sealed, non-porous surface you can rinse afterwards. Glass and windows, sealed car exterior paint, outdoor furniture, outdoor tiles and paths, wheelie bins, bike and scooter frames, hard plastic sports gear. Three things it is not for: food prep surfaces, anything porous or raw, and kitchen grease. For kitchen benchtops reach for Universal Cleaner, and for baked-on grease around the cooktop reach for Kitchen Grease & Oil Cleaner. Spot test anything unfamiliar, and rinse.

Can I use Bathroom & Shower Cleaner outside the bathroom?

Koh Bathroom & Shower Cleaner works outside the bathroom on any sealed, non-porous surface you can rinse afterwards. The formula is a foaming spray at pH 8 that clings, loosens grime and washes off with water, so the test is the surface rather than the room. Sealed and non-porous is in. Porous, raw or food-contact is out. Spot test anything you are unsure of before you treat the whole surface.

✓ The test is the surface, not the room

Nothing about the formula is bathroom-specific. It is a foaming spray at pH 8 that clings to a vertical surface, loosens grime while it sits, then rinses off with water. So the question is never which room you are standing in. It is whether the surface is sealed, non-porous, and something you can rinse when you are done.

Three yes answers and you are fine. Any no and there is a better tool for it, usually one further down this page.

Sealed Non-porous Rinsable pH 8

Where does it work well outside the bathroom?

Outside the bathroom, Koh Bathroom & Shower Cleaner suits glass and windows, outdoor furniture in plastic, powder-coated metal or glass, outdoor tiles and paths, wheelie bins and rubbish bins, bike and scooter frames and wheels, helmets and hard plastic guards, sports mats and hard plastic toys. Spray, let the foam sit a few minutes, agitate if the grime is stuck on, then rinse with water. On windows, buff dry with a clean microfibre.

✓ Around the house and outside

Windows and glass doors. Sealed car exterior paint. Outdoor furniture in plastic, powder-coated metal or glass. Outdoor tiles, pavers and paths. Wheelie bins and kitchen bins, inside and out, where a foam and rinse lifts the grime the smell is coming from.

On windows, spray, wipe, then buff dry with a clean microfibre while the glass is still slightly damp. Dry glass streaks, damp glass buffs clear.

✓ Gear, wheels and hard toys

Bike and scooter frames and wheels, helmets, shin and knee guards, exercise mats, hard plastic toys and outdoor play equipment. All of it is sealed and non-porous, all of it rinses.

Two exceptions on a bike. Brake pads and rotors are a job for your bike or brake manufacturer's guidance. And chain lubricant is a different job again, so use what your bike shop recommends.

Which Koh cleaner should I use for which job?

Use Koh Bathroom & Shower Cleaner for sealed, rinsable surfaces such as showers, tiles, glass, bins and outdoor furniture. Use Koh Universal Cleaner for kitchen benchtops, splashbacks, stainless sinks, appliance exteriors, floors and walls, which is the everyday spray and wipe across the rest of the house. Use Koh Kitchen Grease & Oil Cleaner for baked-on grease around ovens, rangehoods, stovetops and oven trays. Each one is built for a different kind of soil, not a different room.

If you own more than one Koh cleaner, the split is by the kind of dirt, not by the room. Here is the whole thing in three cards.

Bathroom & Shower Cleaner

Soap scum, body oils and bathroom build-up. Shower screens, tiles, grout, baths, basins, taps and chrome. Outside the bathroom: windows, sealed car exterior paint, bins, outdoor furniture, paths, bike frames and hard plastic gear.

Foam and rinse Sealed surfaces pH 8

Universal Cleaner

The everyday all-rounder. Kitchen benchtops, splashbacks, stainless sinks, appliance fronts, painted walls, skirting, floors and outdoor tables. This is the one to reach for on kitchen surfaces. Give food prep areas a damp rinse afterwards.

Everyday spray and wipe Kitchen benchtops

Kitchen Grease & Oil Cleaner

Baked-on grease and cooking oil. Rangehood filters, oven doors and interiors, stovetops, oven trays and the splashback right behind the cooktop. The jobs where an everyday spray runs out of puff. Rinse after use.

What should I keep it off?

Keep Koh Bathroom & Shower Cleaner off food prep surfaces, where Koh Universal Cleaner is the right tool. Also off raw or unfinished timber, unsealed natural stone such as marble, travertine and limestone, and unlacquered brass or copper, which react to alkaline cleaners. Skip soft fabric and plush toys, since they hold the formula rather than rinsing clean. For teethers, dummies and bottle teats, follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions instead. For kitchen surfaces, use Koh Universal Cleaner.

⚠ Reach for something else here

1

Food prep surfaces. Chopping boards, benchtops where food is handled, anything that touches what you eat. Use Universal Cleaner there and give the surface a damp rinse afterwards.

2

Anything porous or raw. Unfinished timber, unsealed natural stone such as marble, travertine and limestone, and untreated concrete. Porous surfaces absorb the formula rather than letting it sit on top, so there is nothing to rinse away.

3

Unlacquered brass and copper. Bare metal reacts to alkaline cleaners and can discolour. If the tapware or handle has a lacquer on it you are usually fine, but spot test first.

4

Soft toys and anything that goes in a mouth. Fabric and plush hold the formula instead of rinsing clean. For teethers, dummies and bottle teats, follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions rather than ours.

How do I use it on non-bathroom surfaces?

The method outside the bathroom is the same as inside it. Spot test a small hidden area first and wait a few minutes. Spray Koh Bathroom & Shower Cleaner evenly and let the foam sit for two to three minutes, or up to ten on heavy grime. Agitate with a cloth, sponge or non-scratch pad if the soil is stuck on. Rinse thoroughly with water, then air dry or buff with a clean microfibre. On glass, buff while it is still slightly damp.

✓ Spot test, foam, agitate, rinse

1

Spot test first. A small hidden area, a few minutes, then look for colour change, dulling or softening. Worth doing on anything painted, coated or older than you are sure about.

2

Spray and let it sit. Two to three minutes for everyday grime, up to ten for heavy outdoor build-up. The foam clings so it keeps working on vertical surfaces.

3

Agitate if you need to. Cloth or sponge for most things, a non-scratch pad for stuck-on outdoor soil. Nothing abrasive on glass or gloss finishes.

4

Rinse and dry. A proper water rinse, then air dry or buff with a clean microfibre. On glass, buff while it is still slightly damp for a clear finish.
