What is GECA certification?Updated 4 hours ago

TL;DR: Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA) is Australia's only multi-sector ecolabel. It is an independent third-party certification assessed against a published standard, and for cleaning products that standard covers the environment, human health, social responsibility across the supply chain, and life cycle and packaging. Koh's full liquid cleaning range carries the GECA Ecolabel: Universal Cleaner, Bathroom & Shower Cleaner, Kitchen Grease & Oil Cleaner, Sensitive Laundry Liquid, Stain Remover, Dishwashing Liquid, Dishwasher Tabs and Loo Cleaner Tabs.

What does GECA assess?

The GECA Cleaning Products standard, CP gen 3.0, assesses across four areas. Environment covers volatile organic compound emissions, substances harmful to aquatic environments and sustainably sourced palm oil. Human health covers the exclusion of carcinogens, mutagens and reproductive toxins, plus restrictions on fragrances and irritants. Social responsibility covers fair pay, equal opportunity and safe working conditions through the supply chain. Life cycle and packaging covers recovery, reuse, recycling and responsible disposal. To carry the Ecolabel a product must meet every applicable criterion.

The standard that applies to Koh is the GECA Cleaning Products standard, CP gen 3.0, issued 31 May 2022. It sets requirements across four areas, and to carry the Ecolabel a product has to meet every applicable criterion. Not most of them.

✓ Environment

Limits on volatile organic compound emissions and on substances harmful to aquatic environments, plus a requirement to support sustainably sourced palm oil and palm kernel oil.

VOC limits Aquatic toxicity Palm oil sourcing

✓ Human health

Ingredients classified as carcinogens, mutagens or reproductive toxins are excluded outright, and there are restrictions on fragrances and known irritants.

Excluded ingredient classes Fragrance restrictions

✓ Social responsibility

Workers and suppliers through the supply chain can expect fair pay, equal opportunity and a safe working environment. This is the part of an ecolabel most people do not expect to find.

Fair pay Equal opportunity Safe conditions

✓ Life cycle and packaging

Recovery, reuse, recycling and responsible disposal of materials and packaging, assessed across the product's life rather than at the point of sale.

Recyclability Reuse and recovery Responsible disposal

Products are independently audited at certification and again at each renewal. The standard itself is reviewed on a four-year cycle, so the criteria move with current research and regulation rather than staying fixed.

What is GECA?

GECA stands for Good Environmental Choice Australia. It is Australia's only multi-sector ecolabel and a not-for-profit certification body, running an independent third-party certification program against published standards covering categories from cleaning products and furniture to building materials, electronics and personal care. The Ecolabel is recognised under ISO 14024, the international standard for Type 1 environmental labels, which is the strictest tier of environmental claim labelling. Standards are developed with scientists, industry and a public peer-review process, and reviewed every four years.
