What is GECA certification?Updated 3 hours ago

TL;DR: GECA (Good Environmental Choice Australia) is Australia's only multi-sector ecolabel. It's a third-party certification that assesses products against a published environmental standard covering ingredients, packaging, manufacturing, and product performance. Three Koh products carry the GECA Ecolabel: Universal Cleaner (certified since April 2016), Dishwasher Tabs (since March 2023), and Loo Cleaner Tabs (since July 2023). Universal Cleaner is the longest-running GECA certified product in the Koh range.

GECA Ecolabel

What is GECA?

GECA stands for Good Environmental Choice Australia. It's Australia's only multi-sector ecolabel and a not-for-profit certification body. GECA runs an independent third-party certification program against published environmental standards, covering categories from cleaning products and furniture to building materials, electronics, and personal care. The Ecolabel is recognised by ISO 14024 (the international standard for Type 1 environmental labels), which is the strictest tier of environmental claim labelling. GECA standards are developed with scientists, industry, and a public peer-review process. Each standard is reviewed and renewed every four years to reflect current research, regulations, and innovations in that category.

What does GECA assess?

For cleaning products, the GECA Cleaning Products Standard assesses across multiple criteria including ingredients (toxicity, biodegradability, environmental persistence), packaging (recyclability, recycled content), manufacturing (waste, water, and energy), and product performance (must demonstrate effectiveness against published test methods). To carry the GECA Ecolabel, a product must meet every applicable criterion in the standard. Products are independently audited at certification and at every four-year renewal cycle. GECA does not allow self-declared certification, the assessment is done by an independent auditor against the public standard.

For cleaning products, GECA assesses against four broad areas. To carry the Ecolabel, a product must meet every applicable criterion.

✓ Ingredients

Toxicity, biodegradability, and environmental persistence. Specific substances are excluded entirely.

✓ Packaging

Recyclability and recycled content of packaging materials.

✓ Manufacturing

Waste output, water use, and energy use during production.

✓ Product performance

The product must demonstrate effectiveness against published test methods. Cleaning products that don't actually clean don't pass.

Independent audit at certification and every four years on renewal.
