How do you dispose of Dish Sponges?Updated 2 days ago
TL;DR: Dish Sponges are made from FSC wood-pulp cellulose and are biodegradable and home-compostable. When they are done, tear them up and compost them.
Are they compostable?
Yes. Dish Sponges are made from natural wood pulp fibres (FSC certified) so they break down naturally and are suitable for home composting. When worn out, pop them into your home compost bin (tear into smaller pieces first) or send them to an industrial composting facility if you have access to one.
How to dispose
Remove large food scraps. Shake or rinse off stuck-on food first.
Tear into smaller pieces. This helps home compost bins break them down faster.
Add to your compost heap or green bin. Keep the pile aerated.
Or use industrial composting if your local council offers organics collection.
How long do they last?
Lifespan
With normal household use and proper care, a cellulose sponge typically lasts a few weeks. Product testing and real-world use indicate up to around 5 weeks depending on frequency and how well it is dried between uses.
When to replace
Replace when the sponge becomes ragged, permanently stained, or starts to break down. A worn sponge is doing its job; it just means it is time for a fresh one.
Care tips
After each use
Rinse and squeeze dry after each use. Remove trapped water and food. Store in a well-ventilated spot so it air-dries between uses.
Avoid
Do not leave the sponge sitting in a full sink of water. If you need a quick refresh, rinse thoroughly and let dry in sunlight or on a ventilated rack.
Not recyclable
Cellulose sponges are not suitable for standard kerbside recycling. They are biodegradable and compostable rather than recyclable. Composting is the recommended end-of-life route. If you are unsure about local composting options, check with your council's organics service.

Clean dishes, clean conscience
FSC certified, biodegradable, and home-compostable. When they are done, they go back to the earth.
