Is Kitchen Grease & Oil Cleaner suitable for stainless steel?Updated a day ago

TL;DR: Kitchen Grease & Oil Cleaner suits stainless steel appliances, cooktops, rangehoods, splashbacks and BBQs. Spray, wipe in the direction of the grain with a soft cloth such as a Swedish Dishcloth, rinse, then buff dry with a clean cloth for a streak-free finish. Scrubby Pads are fine on brushed stainless with light pressure. Skip Diamond Sponges and steel wool on polished or mirror-finish stainless, because fine scratches show.

How do I use it on stainless steel?

Koh Kitchen Grease & Oil Cleaner suits stainless steel appliances, cooktops, rangehoods, splashbacks, sinks and BBQs. Method: spray Kitchen Grease & Oil Cleaner straight onto the stainless steel, or onto a Swedish Dishcloth first for small areas; wipe in the direction of the grain, which is the fine lines you can see in the steel, using a soft cloth such as a Swedish Dishcloth or a non-abrasive Dish Sponge; rinse with clean water; then buff dry with a clean dry cloth. Wiping with the grain rather than across it is what gives a streak-free finish, because stainless steel has a directional grain that traps residue in the fine grooves.

✓ The streak-free method

1

Spray. Spray Kitchen Grease & Oil Cleaner onto the surface, or onto a Swedish Dishcloth first for controlled application on small areas.

2

Wipe. Wipe with a soft cloth in the direction of the grain, which is the fine lines you can see in the steel.

3

Rinse. Rinse the surface with clean water.

4

Buff. Buff dry with a clean dry cloth to finish streak-free.

✓ Why the grain matters

Stainless steel has a directional grain, the fine lines you can see in the surface. Wiping with the grain lifts grease and marks cleanly. Wiping across or against it traps residue in the fine grooves and leaves streaks or a hazy finish.

Which tools should I use, and which should I avoid?

Most stainless steel in a modern kitchen is brushed, with a visible grain. Polished and mirror-finish stainless is less common and turns up mainly on some sinks, decorative trim and commercial equipment. For everyday cleaning on either finish, soft cloths such as Swedish Dishcloths and non-abrasive Dish Sponges are the right tools. For heavier grease on brushed stainless, Scrubby Pads work with light pressure and always with the grain, because the brushing pattern hides minor friction marks. Avoid Scrubby Pads, Diamond Sponges and steel wool on polished or mirror-finish stainless, because scratches show clearly and do not buff out. If you are not sure which finish you have, test the back or side of an appliance first.

✓ Brushed stainless takes a Scrubby Pad

For heavier buildup on brushed stainless, which covers most modern fridges, ovens, dishwashers and BBQs, Scrubby Pads work with light pressure and always with the grain. The brushing pattern hides minor friction marks.

⚠ Polished stainless takes soft cloths only

Skip Scrubby Pads, Diamond Sponges and steel wool on polished or mirror-finish stainless, which shows up on some sinks, decorative trim and commercial equipment. Scratches show clearly and do not buff out.

Why is it leaving streaks on my stainless?

Streaks on stainless steel after cleaning usually come from one of three things: too much product, so residue dries on the surface before you wipe it off; wiping across or against the grain rather than with it, which traps residue in the grooves; or skipping the rinse and buff steps. The fix is to use less product and spray onto the cloth first for small areas, wipe with the grain, rinse with clean water before drying, and finish by buffing with a clean dry cloth. For stubborn water spots, a quick wipe with white vinegar after rinsing helps.

✓ Use less product

Too much product leaves residue. For small areas, spray onto a Swedish Dishcloth first and then apply it.

✓ Wipe with the grain

Wiping across or against the grain traps residue in the fine grooves of the steel. Always wipe in the direction of the lines.

✓ Rinse, then buff dry

Skipping the rinse and dry steps is the most common cause of streaks. Rinse with clean water and buff dry with a clean cloth, either microfibre or a fresh Swedish Dishcloth. For stubborn water spots, a quick wipe with white vinegar after rinsing helps.
