What is not in Loo Cleaner Tabs?

Koh Loo Cleaner Tabs contain no chlorine bleach (sodium hypochlorite), no added fragrance or perfume, no phosphates, no synthetic dyes, no quaternary ammonium disinfectants and no solvents. Because it is a dry tablet with no solvent and no fragrance, there is nothing in it that evaporates off as a volatile organic compound (VOC). The formula is Sensitive Choice approved by the National Asthma Council Australia and certified by Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA). Use the tabs for cleaning the bowl and removing mineral staining, not as a substitute for a dedicated disinfectant.

✓ What is not in there

Loo Cleaner Tabs are a dry tablet with no solvent and no added fragrance, so there is nothing in them that evaporates off as a volatile organic compound (VOC). They are designed to clean the bowl, lift mineral staining, and rinse away with the water.

What is in Loo Cleaner Tabs?

Koh Loo Cleaner Tabs list 14 ingredients on the box: citric acid, DL-tartaric acid, sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium percarbonate, polyethylene glycol (PEG-4000), polyvinylpyrrolidone (crospovidone), croscarmellose sodium, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, trisodium dicarboxymethyl alaninate, lipase and protease. Each tab is wrapped in a cold water-soluble PVOH film, also called PVA, which dissolves with the tab. Sodium bicarbonate is bicarb soda. Sodium percarbonate is an oxygen bleach. Lipase and protease are enzymes. Tap any ingredient in the article to see what that one does.

✓ What is in there

  • ✓ Descalers (citric acid, DL-tartaric acid)
  • ✓ Bicarb soda (sodium bicarbonate)
  • ✓ Washing soda (sodium carbonate)
  • ✓ A surfactant (sodium lauryl sulfate)
  • ✓ Oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate)
  • ✓ Two enzymes (lipase, protease)
  • ✓ A soil dispersant (trisodium dicarboxymethyl alaninate)
  • ✓ Tablet binders, a filler, a disintegrant and a processing aid
  • ✓ A water-soluble PVA wrapper

That is 14 ingredients on the list, plus the wrapper.

✓ The full list, as printed on the box

Citric Acid, DL-Tartaric Acid, Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Carbonate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Percarbonate, Polyethylene Glycol (PEG-4000), Polyvinylpyrrolidone (Crospovidone), Croscarmellose Sodium, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Magnesium Stearate, Trisodium Dicarboxymethyl Alaninate, Lipase, Protease.

The box also carries the certification marks. Formulations get reviewed from time to time, so the product page carries the current batch detail.

Citric Acid

A descaler. Dissolves limescale and the mineral marks that build up around the water line.

DL-Tartaric Acid

A descaler. Helps shift limescale and soap scum.

Sodium Bicarbonate

Bicarb soda. A mild abrasive that lifts marks off the bowl, and a deodoriser.

Sodium Carbonate

Washing soda. An alkaline cleaning agent that helps shift grease and mineral deposits.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

A surfactant. Lifts grease and soil off the bowl surface so it rinses away.

Sodium Percarbonate

An oxygen bleach. Releases hydrogen peroxide in water to lift stains and cut odours.

Polyethylene Glycol (PEG-4000)

Tablet binder.

Polyvinylpyrrolidone (Crospovidone)

Tablet binder.

Croscarmellose Sodium

Tablet disintegrant.

Microcrystalline Cellulose

Tablet filler.

Magnesium Stearate

Tablet processing aid.

Trisodium Dicarboxymethyl Alaninate

A soil dispersant. Keeps loosened grime suspended so it flushes away instead of settling back on the bowl.

Lipase

An enzyme. Targets fatty and oily residues.

Protease

An enzyme. Targets protein-based residues such as urine and organic waste.

PVA wrapper film

A cold water-soluble film, the same technology used in dishwasher and laundry pods. It is the wrapper each tab comes in, and it dissolves with the tab, so there is nothing to peel off. More on the PVA wrapper and the environment

What do these ingredients mean for septic and greywater systems?

Koh Loo Cleaner Tabs are septic compatible when used as directed, and the ingredient list is the reason. There is no chlorine bleach and no quaternary ammonium disinfectant, which are the two things that knock over the bacteria a septic tank or aerated wastewater treatment system relies on, and there are no phosphates. Three rules apply on any septic or greywater system. Use the product only as directed. Never pour undiluted product straight into a septic tank, a greywater line or an inspection opening. Avoid excessive use beyond normal cleaning. If you reuse treated water for irrigation, suitability also depends on your soil type, whether you are watering edible crops or ornamentals, and your local council rules.

✓ Why the absence list matters here

Septic compatible when used as directed, and the ingredient list is the reason. No chlorine bleach and no quaternary ammonium disinfectant, which are the two things that knock over the bacteria a septic tank or an aerated wastewater treatment system depends on. No phosphates either.

1

Use only as directed. One tab per toilet, dropped straight into the bowl.

2

Never pour undiluted product into a septic tank, greywater line or inspection opening.

3

Avoid excessive use beyond normal cleaning. More product does not clean better and it loads the system.

⚠ If you reuse treated water on the garden, three things change the answer

Greywater reuse is not only about the product. It depends on your soil type, since clay and sandy soils handle irrigation water differently. It depends on what you are watering, because edible crops carry stricter rules than ornamentals. And it depends on your local council, since requirements vary by state and council area. Check your local guidelines, and treat your system manufacturer's approved-product list as the final word.
