What is Diamond Sponge made of and how do I dispose of it?Updated 3 days ago
TL;DR: Diamond Sponges are made from high-density PU foam with a silica-alumina abrasive coating. Not recyclable in most kerbside bins due to bonded mixed materials. Reuse for dirty tasks when worn, then place in general waste.
Material
Core
High-density PU foam block. Provides the structure and gives the sponge its firm, springy feel.
Coating
Silica-alumina abrasive film bonded to the foam. This is the "diamond" grit that does the heavy lifting on stubborn build-up.
Recycling and disposal
Not recyclable
The bonded abrasive film cannot be separated from the foam at standard facilities. Mixed materials are rejected by most recycling streams.
Best end-of-life options
Downgrade a worn sponge to outdoor grills, tools, or garden pots. When the coating is smooth or the block is crumbly, place it in household rubbish.
