TL;DR: Dishwashing Tabs are wrapped in biodegradable PVA film designed to dissolve completely in the wash. Leftover film or residue almost always points to placement, water temperature, or water-flow. Three checks below.
What should I check first?
✓ Placement
Standard or auto cycles: in the dispenser. Short or eco cycles: flat on the tub floor under the lower spray arm.
✓ Temperature
PVA film needs 55 to 65°C to dissolve fully. Cold or low-temp eco cycles can leave residue.
✓ Water flow
Spray arms need to spin freely. Filters need to be clean. Both let water reach the tab properly.
What if the tab is stuck or still not dissolving?
✓ Before loading
Handle tabs with dry hands only. Make sure the dispenser compartment is completely dry before loading. Moisture can start the PVA film dissolving prematurely or stick the tab to the compartment.
✓ Try in order
Check the dispenser lid. Tall items, protruding handles, or a poorly loaded top rack can block the lid from opening mid-cycle.
Move to the tub floor. Place the tab flat under the lower spray arm. Bypasses the dispenser entirely.
Switch to a hotter or longer cycle. Normal or intensive cycle, 55 to 65°C. Eco and quick cycles can run too cool or too short.
What about film or residue on dishes?
✓ Quick fixes
Run a hot rinse cycle (no detergent) to clear residue from dishes and the dishwasher interior. Top up the rinse-aid reservoir, it helps water sheet off cleanly. Switch to a hotter wash cycle going forward. If your dishwasher has a salt reservoir, refill with dishwasher salt for hard-water areas. If film keeps coming back, hard water is usually the cause.
