How do I clean carpets, rugs, and upholstery with Koh?Updated 3 days ago

TL;DR: For larger carpet, rug, or upholstery areas, dilute Sensitive Laundry Liquid (1 pump per 1L warm water) and run through a handheld wet-vac or carpet cleaning machine. For small spots and marks, spray Universal Cleaner lightly and blot. Sensitive Laundry Liquid isn't suitable for wool, silk, cashmere, or other protein-based natural fibres. Always spot test first.

How do I clean large carpet, rug, or upholstery areas?

Use diluted Koh Sensitive Laundry Liquid with a handheld wet-vac or carpet cleaning machine. The dilution ratio is 1 pump (4ml) per 1L warm water. Fill the machine tank with warm water first, then add the detergent (this prevents over-foaming). Run the machine over the area following the manufacturer's instructions. Let the surface dry completely before walking on it or replacing cushions. Sensitive Laundry Liquid isn't suitable for wool, silk, cashmere, or other protein-based natural fibres; repeated use on protein fibres can weaken them over time. Spot test in a hidden corner first to confirm colourfastness on dyed carpet or upholstery.

✓ Dilution ratio and method

1 pump (4ml) of Sensitive Laundry Liquid per 1L warm water. Add water to the tank first, then the detergent. Use with a wet-vac or carpet machine per the manufacturer's instructions. Let the surface dry fully before use.

⚠ Not for wool, silk, or other protein fibres

Sensitive Laundry Liquid is suitable for synthetic-fibre carpets and rugs (nylon, polyester, polypropylene, acrylic) but isn't recommended for wool, silk, cashmere, or other protein-based natural fibres. Repeated use on protein fibres can weaken them over time. Not suitable for wool carpets, wool rugs, or silk upholstery.

How do I clean small spots and marks?

For small spots on carpet, rugs, or upholstery, use Koh Universal Cleaner. Spray lightly onto the affected area (don't soak), blot gently with a clean microfibre cloth working from the outside of the stain inward, and let the surface air dry. Don't scrub. Scrubbing spreads the stain across more fibres and can damage the pile or weave. Always spot test in an inconspicuous area first to confirm colourfastness. For coloured upholstery and dyed carpets especially, the alkaline pH can affect some dyes. If you spot a colour change in the test area, stop and use a fabric-specific cleaner. Universal Cleaner is suitable for cotton, linen, polyester, and most synthetic blends in this spot-treatment role.

✓ Three-step spot clean

1

Spot test first. Spray a hidden area, blot, wait a few minutes, check for colour change before treating the visible stain.

2

Spray lightly, don't soak. Universal Cleaner works on contact. Over-saturating pushes the stain through the fabric and into the carpet backing or cushion foam.

3

Blot, don't scrub. Work from the outside of the stain inward with a clean microfibre cloth. Lift the stain, don't spread it. Air dry fully.

What about upholstery cushions and protecting the carpet backing?

Avoid soaking upholstery cushions. Moisture trapped inside cushion foam causes mildew and odour over time, and once it's set in, it's very hard to get out. Keep treatment light and surface-level. For removable cushion covers, check the care label first. Some can be machine-washed with Koh Sensitive Laundry Liquid (if not wool or silk), which is gentler than most laundry detergents. For carpets, moisture reaching the backing can weaken adhesives and promote mould growth. Keep treatment at the fibre level only. Use fans or open windows to speed drying. Results vary by fabric type, stain type, and how long the stain has been there.

⚠ Don't over-saturate

Trapped moisture in cushion foam causes mildew and odour. Moisture in carpet backing weakens adhesives and can promote mould. Keep treatment light and surface-level. Results vary by fabric type, stain type, and age of the stain. Always spot test first.
