Do Koh gift cards expire?Updated 3 hours ago
TL;DR: It depends on how the gift card was issued. Gift cards you purchased have a minimum 3-year expiry under Australian Consumer Law. Gift cards issued free of charge as part of a promotion are legally exempt from that rule and may carry a shorter expiry period.
Purchased gift cards: 3-year minimum
Under the Australian Consumer Law (ACL), any gift card sold for value must be redeemable for a minimum of 3 years from the date of purchase. This applies to gift cards bought directly as a gift for someone else.
Promotional gift cards: shorter expiry applies
The 3-year rule does not apply to gift cards issued free of charge for promotional purposes. This is confirmed by the ACCC and the ACL. Promotional gift cards, such as those earned through a spend threshold, referral, competition, or campaign, may carry a shorter expiry.
How to tell which type you have
Check how it was issued
If you purchased the gift card directly or received it as a bought gift from someone else, the 3-year ACL protection applies. If the gift card was issued to you automatically, as part of a spend reward, a referral bonus, a promotional campaign, or any offer where you did not pay for it, it is a promotional gift card and the 3-year rule does not apply. Check the original email or terms for the expiry date that applied at the time of issue.
If your card has expired
If your gift card has expired, we are not able to reactivate or extend it. If you believe your card was a purchased gift card (not a promotional gift with purchase) and it expired in under 3 years, please contact our team with your original purchase details and we will review it.
