A conventional softener works by leaving a conditioning agent sitting on the fibres. Sensitive Laundry Liquid takes a different route. Cellulase, one of the enzymes in the formula, works on the tiny loose fibres that build up on natural fibres wash after wash, which is what helps cotton keep its as-new feel and stay softer for longer.

A lot of what people associate with softener is the scent rather than the feel. There's no added fragrance in Sensitive Laundry Liquid, and no dyes or optical brighteners. It's Sensitive Choice approved and Dermatest tested, which is why sensitive households tend to land on it.
Do I still need a separate fabric softener?

Dose Sensitive Laundry Liquid into the main detergent drawer, or straight into the drum before you load. A normal load of 3 to 6 kg takes 24 mL, which is 6 full pumps of the Laundry Pump or the 24 mL marker on the Laundry Dosing Cup.
Put the softener in the softener compartment, usually marked with a flower or a star. Your machine holds it back and releases it during the rinse, which is where softener is meant to act.
Follow the softener manufacturer's dose. It's their product, so their instructions apply.
Keeping the two in separate compartments is just how the machine is designed to run. It's the same advice you'd get for any detergent.
Are there loads where softener is a bad idea?

Towels. Softener residue builds up on the loops and reduces how much water a towel takes up. Skip it and towels stay thirsty.
Activewear and moisture-wicking fabrics. Softener sits in the wicking structure that moves sweat away from the skin, which is the one thing those fabrics are built to do.
Fire-retardant children's sleepwear. Softener can interfere with the flame-retardant treatment, so leave it out entirely on those items.
