How do I remove hair dye stains from fabric?Updated 4 hours ago
TL;DR: For hair dye on fabric, pre-treat with Stain Remover, wait 10 minutes, then wash with Sensitive Laundry Liquid. Act fast — fresh stains lift more easily than dried ones. Hair dyes vary by brand and shade, so complete removal isn't guaranteed.
What do I need?
Spray-on pre-treat to help lift the dye from the fibres before washing.
Fragrance-free wash to follow the pre-treat. Dermatest certified for sensitive skin.
How do I remove hair dye step by step?
✓ Step by step
Act fast if fresh. Blot excess with a clean, damp cloth. Avoid rubbing, which can drive the dye deeper into the fibres.
Spray Stain Remover until the area is fully covered with foam, then let it sit for 10 minutes.
Wash per the garment care label using Sensitive Laundry Liquid.
Check before drying. If the stain remains, repeat steps 2 and 3. Don't tumble dry or iron until the stain has gone — heat will set it permanently.
⚠ Before you start
Avoid Stain Remover on wool, silk, cashmere, alpaca, mohair, rayon, viscose, and linen. The enzymes can act on these fibres over repeated use. See the fabric compatibility article for the full list and what to use instead.
For unfamiliar fabrics, spot-test on an inside seam first. Colourfastness varies by dye and garment.
⚠ Set your expectations
Hair dyes differ by brand and shade and are often designed to be permanent on hair fibres. Some stains may only lighten rather than fully disappear. Treating as early as possible gives the best chance of removal.
