Is Universal Cleaner fragrance-free?Updated a day ago

TL;DR: Universal Cleaner has no added fragrance. No perfumes, no masking agents, no essential oils. You may notice a very mild scent from the two ingredients themselves, nothing perfumed. If you prefer a scent, add 2 to 3 drops of essential oil to your spray bottle. Lemon Scented Tea Tree Oil is formulated for exactly this. More than a few drops can interfere with the atomiser spray mechanism.

Is Universal Cleaner scented?

Koh Universal Cleaner has no added fragrance by design. The formula is two ingredients: potassium hydroxide and laboratory grade purified water. No perfumes, no essential oils, no masking agents, no dyes. You may notice a very mild scent from the ingredients themselves, which is normal and nothing perfumed. Leaving fragrance out is part of why Universal Cleaner is Allergy UK certified, Sensitive Choice approved by the National Asthma Council of Australia, recognised by the Eczema Association of Australasia, and Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA) certified. It suits households managing asthma, eczema, fragrance sensitivity or chemical sensitivity, and anyone who would rather their cleaning products didn't announce themselves.

✓ Fragrance-free by design

No added perfumes, no essential oils, no masking agents, no dyes. Fragrance is the most common trigger in a cleaning product, and the simplest way to leave it out is to have only two ingredients in the first place.

You may notice a very mild scent from the ingredients themselves. That is normal, it is not perfume, and it fades as the surface dries. Can I add a scent to Universal Cleaner?

To scent Koh Universal Cleaner, add 2 to 3 drops of essential oil directly to your Atomiser Spray Bottle after filling it, then give it a gentle swirl to combine. Lemon Scented Tea Tree Oil is Koh's own blend, formulated to pair with the alkaline formula and dosed for a typical atomiser fill. Other essential oils work too, with lavender, eucalyptus and peppermint the popular choices. Stick to 2 to 3 drops per fill. More than that can interfere with the atomiser spray mechanism by causing the internal dip tube to slip off the nozzle. Adding oil means the bottle is no longer fragrance-free, so keep an unscented bottle as well if anyone in the house is fragrance-sensitive.

⚠ Keep it to 2 to 3 drops

Too much essential oil can cause the internal dip tube inside the Atomiser Spray Bottle to slip off the nozzle, which stops the bottle spraying properly. Two to three drops per fill, swirled gently, and you're fine.

Lavender, eucalyptus and peppermint work too. Worth knowing: once you add oil, that bottle is no longer fragrance-free, so keep an unscented bottle as well if someone in the house is fragrance-sensitive.

Max 3 drops Swirl gently Keep one bottle unscented

What if my atomiser stops spraying after I add oil?

If your Atomiser Spray Bottle stops spraying after you add essential oil, too much oil has most likely dislodged the internal dip tube. Unscrew the spray head, check that the small plastic tube inside is seated firmly on the base of the nozzle, and push it back on if it has come loose. If the tube looks oily, rinse the spray head under warm water and let it dry before reattaching. If the bottle still holds a high oil concentration, top it up with fresh Koh Universal Cleaner to dilute it. From then on, stick to 2 to 3 drops per atomiser fill.

✓ Quick fix

1

Unscrew the spray head from the bottle.

2

Check the small plastic tube inside. Press it firmly back onto the base of the nozzle if it has come loose.

3

Rinse and dilute if needed. If the tube is oily, rinse the head under warm water, dry it, and reattach. Top the bottle up with fresh Universal Cleaner to dilute.

From then on, 2 to 3 drops per fill keeps it clear.
