Can you use Universal Cleaner on timber floors?Updated 4 days ago

TL;DR: Sealed timber and engineered wood both take a light, quick clean with Universal Cleaner and the Spray Mop. Spray lightly just ahead of the pad and mop it straight up, so nothing sits on the boards. If your boards are oiled or waxed rather than sealed, spot test first or run plain water through the mop instead.

Can you use Universal Cleaner on timber floors?

Universal Cleaner suits sealed timber, polished boards and engineered wood, including floating floors. Use a light, quick clean: spray lightly just ahead of the pad and mop it straight up. Oiled or waxed boards are the exception, so spot test those first or run plain water through the mop instead. Universal Cleaner is an alkaline formulation, not pH neutral.

✓ Sealed and polished timber

A light, quick clean is ideal. The sealed finish keeps moisture on the surface where the pad can pick it straight back up.

✓ Engineered wood and floating floors

Same approach as solid boards. Keep the spray light so moisture stays off the joins, and mop each section dry before moving on.

✓ Every other floor type

Tile, laminate, vinyl, stone and more are covered in our full guide: What floors can you use Universal Cleaner on?

Why does a light, quick clean matter on timber?

Dwell time is what damages timber finishes, not the cleaner itself. Even plain water will mark a highly varnished floor if it sits long enough. Spraying a small amount just ahead of the pad and mopping it straight up means nothing gets time to sit. Once it is dry, it is done.

✓ It is all about dwell time

What marks a timber finish is liquid sitting on it, not the cleaner itself. Even plain water will mark a highly varnished floor if it pools long enough. Spraying a small amount just ahead of the pad and mopping it straight up means nothing gets that time. One trigger pull covers roughly a square metre, two at most.

What if your boards are oiled or waxed?

Oiled and waxed timber wears its finish as a surface layer rather than a hard seal, so spot test Universal Cleaner somewhere out of sight first, or run plain water through the Spray Mop instead. Spray a small amount, wait a few minutes, wipe it off and check for any change in colour or sheen.

⚠ Spot test oiled or waxed boards first

Oiled and waxed finishes sit on the timber as a surface layer rather than a hard seal. Spot test somewhere out of sight first: spray a small amount, leave it a few minutes, wipe it off and check for any change in colour or sheen. Or skip the question entirely and run plain water through the Spray Mop instead.

What if your flooring warranty asks for a pH neutral cleaner?

Universal Cleaner is an alkaline formulation, so it is not pH neutral. Some flooring manufacturers make a pH neutral cleaner a condition of warranty cover. If yours does, fill the Spray Mop with plain water instead. Water only is a fully supported way to use the mop and keeps your warranty intact.

✓ Run the mop on water only

Fill the Spray Mop with plain water instead. Same mop, same pads, just a different fill. It is a fully supported way to use the mop, and plenty of customers clean this way by choice.

Warranty stays intactSame mop and pads

⚠ Universal Cleaner is not pH neutral

It is an alkaline formulation, which is part of how it lifts grease and grime without scrubbing. If your flooring manufacturer makes a pH neutral cleaner a condition of cover, follow them rather than us. Check the warranty before you clean, not after.
